Samsung Techwin, Bombardier to debut Rockwell Collins eXchange

ORLANDO (November 08, 2005) - Rockwell Collins announced that its eXchangeTM broadband data and live TV solution will debut on Samsung Techwin's two Bombardier Global Express XRS* business jets, as well on a Bombardier Global 5000* demonstrator aircraft. A third undisclosed customer has also selected eXchange for their Global Express XRS business jet. The eXchange system will first be installed on the Bombardier Global 5000 demonstrator aircraft, with Samsung Techwin and the third customer aircraft to follow.

"We're pleased with the customer response to eXchange and proud of the competitive advantages it will bring to the corporate aviation marketplace," said Denny Helgeson, vice president and general manager, Business and Regional Systems for Rockwell Collins. "With eXchange, passengers will experience a home and office-like environment in the aircraft with live TV and real-time high speed connectivity so they can be more productive, well informed and entertained during flight."

"We are delighted that Samsung and Rockwell Collins share our vision of the added value that in-flight connectivity can bring to passengers," said Duncan Koerbel, vice-president and general manager, Global Product Line for Bombardier Business Aircraft. "This is another example of Bombardier's commitment to apply advanced cabin technologies that meet emerging needs."

The capability of the eXchange system is made possible through a strategic agreement with Connexion by BoeingSM, a business unit of the Boeing Company. The eXchange system combines the advanced antenna technology and signal processing capabilities of Rockwell Collins' Tailwind® 500 multi-region Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) TV system with the broadband Internet, data, and entertainment connectivity service of Connexion by Boeing to enable real-time, nearly global two-way Ku-band data coverage.

Rockwell Collins eXchange system will integrate with the company's Airshow 21 cabin electronics system. Passengers can use the eXchange system to access the Internet and fire-wall protected corporate intranets; send outgoing e-mail or open large attachments from incoming e-mail; get the news, weather or destination information; or view live DBS television programming. The eXchange system brings over 400 channels of DBS TV containing content rich digital news, sports and entertainment programming straight to the cabin. It also provides the fastest data connectivity at speeds of up to 5 Mbps to the aircraft and 256 Kbps from the aircraft.

The system can receive live digital television signals in various DBS footprints around the world, including the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Subscription-based programming is available in these regions through agreements with DIRECTV in the U.S., TPS in Europe, and Showtime in the Middle East. The integrated eXchange system will also allow customers to receive eXchange TV while flying over oceanic regions through its relationship with Connexion by Boeing. This offering is not available with any other aircraft approved satellite TV system supplier.
