Rockwell Collins First in Industry to Provide Classified, Worldwide HF Email Into the Department of Defense's Secret Internet Protocol Router Network

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (November 19, 2002) - Rockwell Collins (NYSE:COL), a leader in high frequency voice and data communications, is the first in the industry to successfully demonstrate worldwide HF email capability into the Department of Defense's (DoD) Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET), Unclassified Information Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET) and Internet. This is the first time the U.S. Air Force has had the capability to send worldwide classified and secure emails using HF communication without needing to know the aircraft's location.

Information was transferred using Rockwell Collins ARC-230 radio and HF Messenger equipment thru three SCOPE Command ground stations to and from a simulated AWACS aircraft. The company successfully transferred email between SIPRNET users at several DoD installations including Fort Huachuca and Andrews, Brooks, Tinker, Scott and Langley Air Force Bases.

Collins HF Messenger provides fast, accurate and cost-effective forms of wireless messaging. Its easy user interface, in connection with most Mil Std 181-141B HF radios, permits personal computers or other data input devices to exchange text, files, facsimiles, images and pictures.

With the addition of HF Messenger to SCOPE Command, authorized and equipped users have cost-effective global access to classified and unclassified messages with over-the-air data rates of up to 9600 bits-per-second.

In addition, the system provides secure and non-secure command and control capability between airborne and ground users. Using Automatic Link Establishment (ALE), the system provides a messaging service with automatic routing through the ground station while selecting the most appropriate radio frequency connectivity for ground-to-air messages, eliminating the need for operators to manually select the parameters for HF communications.
