Rockwell Collins releases latest software for Airshow Network and adds connection to AirCell phone systems
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (September 08, 2003) - Rockwell Collins has begun upgrading users of its Airshow Network news and information service with the latest version of
software, called P4. The new network protocol improves overall connectivity of the Airshow Network and adds support for AirCell's
on-board telephone system. It is available now for new installations as well as upgrades for existing Airshow Network customers.
Introduced in 1997, the Collins Airshow Network is in service on hundreds of aircraft worldwide using a variety of phone systems,
including MagnaStar and SATCOM. Users will realize more first-time connections, more reliable connections, and faster data
transfers when connecting to the news, sports, weather and financial services provided by the system.
Extensive lab and flight testing of the P4 software was conducted for Magnastar and SATCOM connections. Successful testing
was completed in OEM test facilities and using the Airshow Customer Advisory Council. The in-flight Beta tests with P4, logging
over 142 updates on nine different aircraft, confirmed a nearly double improvement in the single call success rate and even
higher overall success rates.
With the new release, business jet owners can also begin connecting the Airshow Network to new or existing installations of
AirCell's phone systems, including its U.S.-based Airborne Cellular system, and its newest Iridium system, providing global
coverage. Rockwell Collins tested the new software over the AirCell phone system at AirCell's facilities in Louisville, Colo.
Flight testing was completed with AirCell at both low and high altitudes.
The Airshow Network was the first product in the industry to offer real-time, text-based news, weather, sports, and financial
information over an airborne telephone system. In addition to offering branded content from CNN, ESPN SportsTicker, the Wall
Street Journal, and others, the Airshow Network also includes Rockwell Collins' well-known Airshow moving map product all
in a single line-replaceable unit. Supplemental Type Certificates for the Airshow Network are available for a variety of aircraft
makes and models.
